The Texas Capitol: National Historic Landmark

The Texas Capitol is a formidable exponent of the architecture of the late 19th century; it is distinguished as one of the most beautiful capitols of the US. By the year 1986 it was recognized as a National Historic Landmark due to its contribution of the American history. The Capitol is located in one of the highest points of the city of Austin and from its top is possible to admire the Colorado River. The main campus of the University of Texas is very close to the building too.

This jewel of the architecture was designed by the architect Elijah E. Myers, who is the same that designed the capitols of Colorado and Michigan. In regards for the design of the capitol Myers received three million acres in the Texas Panhandle that years later became in the XIT Ranch.

The construction began in February 1882 and it was finished in 1888. The style of the building is Renaissance Revival and is based in the Italy architecture of the 15th century. This is the second biggest capitol of the US (the first one is the National Capitol, which is located in Washington D.C.).

If you are one of those persons who enjoy visiting historic and amazing places, the Texas Capitol may be a very interesting option for you, if you visit Texas do not miss the chance and visit this wonderful jewel of the American architecture.
