The Big Texan Steak Ranch: Are You Ready to Eat?
The Big Texan Steak Ranch is a very famous restaurant which is located in Amarillo, TX. It was founded in 1959 by Bob Lee who came to Amarillo and owned an old restaurant in the old airport of the city. He started the steak business because he saw that in the city there was not a restaurant of that kind. At the beginning, the restaurant was called Big Texan, and in it, Lee offered the biggest steaks in the lonely star state.
The restaurant is famous due to its 72 ounces steak which is a challenge for all those with a big appetite. The history of this steak was born when one day, Bob started to eat as much meat as he can; as a result, he ate 72 ounces of meat. When the Interstate 40 opened during the early 70’s, Lee saw the opportunity of moving his business to another place closer to this new road. The place where he built the new restaurant is where it is still located: on the east side of Amarillo.
Two years after the opening of the new location, the restaurant became very famous especially among ranchers who lived near and other people such as truckers who had to pass by that way. Today, the restaurant can seat 450 people; it also has a gift shop, bar and offers a better service.
At present, it is normal the free 72 ounces steak contest, which consists of eating a steak of that weight. The people who reach to eat all that meat receive $72 as price. This price is just recognition and the contest is very famous not only in Amarillo but all around the world.
