Hidalgo




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
Hidalgo is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,322 at the 2000 census. It is home to the Rio Grande Valley Dorados of the af2 arena football league and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League.
 
Modern-day Hidalgo was first settled by Spanish colonists led by Jose de Escandon in about 1749. The colony was known by multiple names La Habitacion, Rancho San Luis, and San Luisito. In 1852, John Young settled in the area and renamed the town Edinburgh after his place of birth, Edinburgh, Scotland; Edinburgh became the county seat of Hidalgo County. The town was incorporated in 1876, and its name was changed to Hidalgo in 1885. Edinburg formerly Chapin became the county seat in 1908.
 
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 7,322 people, 1,747 households, and 1,593 families residing in the city. The population density was 649.9 square kilometers. There were 1,880 housing units at an average density of 166.9 square kilometers. The racial makeup of the city was 82.12 percent White, 0.12 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 15.45 percent from other races and 1.90 percent from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 97.75 percent of the population.

Most of Hidalgo is served by the Hidalgo Independent School District. Some of Hidalgo is served by the Valley View Independent School District. In addition, South Texas Independent School District operates magnet schools that serve the community. As it is often regarded as among the most beautiful parts of Texas one of the most visited places amongst the most die-hard travelers the world over.
