South Houston




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
South Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 15,833 at the 2000 census. It is bordered by the city of Houston and the city of Pasadena. South Houston is part of the Houston Metropolitan Area.
 
South Houston is adjacent to Pasadena two miles southeast of the intersection of Interstate Highway 45 and State Highway 3, in southeastern Harris County. The town was named Dumont when it was founded in 1907 by C. S. Woods of the Western Land Company. By 1910 a post office had been established, and by 1913 the town was incorporated as South Houston.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 square kilometers, none of which is covered with water. In the city the population was spread out with 34.1 percent under the age of 18, 11.7 percent from 18 to 24, 30.8 percent from 25 to 44, 16.5 percent from 45 to 64, and 6.8 percent who were 65 years of age or older.
 
South Houston is served by Pasadena Independent School District. All of South Houston is served by South Houston High School.
