Denton




Texas is a state located in the southern and western regions of the United States of America. The state is second largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth largest port in the world.
 
Denton is a city in the United States and is the county seat of Denton County, Texas. According to the United States census bureau, the city has a total area of 161.4 square kilometers of which 159.3 square kilometers is land and 2.1 square kilometers of it is water. The city was founded in 1856 because of the need for a county seat. Denton, as well as Denton County, was named after John B. Denton, a prominent methodist lawyer and native American fighter. The city was ultimately incorporated in 1866, when J.B. Sawyer was elected the first mayor. The current mayor of Denton, as of 2006, is Perry McNeill. The city is home to two major universities, the university of north Texas and Texas woman's university.
