Stephenville




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
Stephenville, a city founded in the 1860s, is in Erath County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 14,921. It is the county seat of Erath County, and home to Tarleton State University. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 26.0 square kilometers. About 26.0 square kilometers  of its total area is occupied by land and 0.1 square kilometers is occupied by water.
 
The city of Stephenville is served by the Stephenville Independent School District. Stephenville is home to Tarleton State University, the second largest university in the Texas A and M University System. George B. Erath, a native of Vienna, Austria, came to America in 1832. He was an Indian fighter, surveyor, soldier at San Jacinto, Texas Ranger, Republic of Texas congressman, member of the legislature of the state of Texas, and a major in the confederate army. In 1849, Erath surveyed the town of Waco, and in 1949, the Waco Tribune Herald, in its Centennial edition, said, George B. Erath had more to do with the actual settling of Central Texas than any other person.
 
Stephenville is proud to be the home of Tarleton State University and The Stephenville Independent School District. Founded in 1899 as John Tarleton College, in 1917, the Tarleton State University became a part of the Texas A and M University System, gaining official status as a university in 1973. Tarleton University has experienced considerable growth over the past decade, with a current enrollment exceeding 8000.

Stephenville is a city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, cooperative people and luxurious hotels and cottages. It is one of the favorite holiday places for most of the vacation lovers.
