Palestine




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
Palestine is a city in Anderson County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 17,598. It is the county seat of Anderson county and is situated in East Texas. Palestine was named for Palestine, Illinois, the home of an early settler. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 46.3 square kilometers. About 45.8 square kilometers of its area is occupied by land and 0.5 square kilometers by water.
 
Most of Palestine is served by the Palestine independent school district. Some of Palestine is served by the Westwood independent school district. Popular artist T-Bone Burnett released a song with the title Palestine, Texas. Featuring John Mayer, this song uses the interesting name of the city as a metaphor for current events and social commentary. The two artists performed the song on the tonight show with Jay Leno in May 2006.
 
As of the census of 2000, there were 17,598 people, 6,641 households, and 4,582 families residing in the city. The population density of the city was 383.9 per square kilometers. There were 7,668 housing units at an average density of 167.3 per square kilometers. The racial makeup of the city was 64.60 percent white, 24.77 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.79 percent Asian, 0.07 percent Pacific Islander, 7.90 percent from other races, and 1.37 percent from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 14.88 percent of the population.
