Lockhart




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
Lockhart is a city in Caldwell County, Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Caldwell CountyGR6. The city of Lockhart, Texas, is named after Bryd Lockhart, an assistant surveyor and reportedly the first Anglo to set foot in Caldwell County. Byrd Lockhart is survived by James H. Lockhart and his family, who currently reside in Dallas, Texas. Lockhart was the site of a victory of the Texans over the Comanche, at the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. The Texas Legislature proclaimed Lockhart as The Barbecue Capital of Texas.
 
Lockhart has four major barbecue restaurants: Blacks Barbecue, Smitty's Market, Kreuz Barbecue, and Chisholm Trail Barbecue. The local style of barbecue cooking does not use Barbecue sauce. The 1996 Christopher Guest comedy film waiting for Guffman was filmed partly in Lockhart, including the historic courthouse square. Lockhart's Dr. Eugene Clark Library is the oldest operating public library in Texas.
 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.2 square kilometers. 29.1 square kilometers of it is land and 0.1 square kilometers of it is water. The population density is of 398.6 square kilometers. There were 3,871 housing units at an average density of 132.9 square kilometers.

An annual festival where Lockhart celebrates the day Mexico won it's independence from Spain. The festival includes, crafts booths, great food, live entertainment and much more! Lockhart's Fourth of July Family Picnic is held every July 4th at the City Park. Family and friends visit, while enjoying great food, fun activities, sky diver show, and a spectacular fireworks display. Lockhart is served by the Lockhart Independent School District.
