Ennis




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Ennis is a city in Ellis County, Texas. The population was 16,045 at the 2000 census. Some persons attempt to pronounce Ennis like Enos. According to the United States census bureau, the city has a total area of 47.7 square kilometers and 46.6 square kilometers of it is land and 1.0 square kilometers of it is water. Ennis is the highest point of land between the Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex and Galveston, Texas when considering a strict North to South line of travel. Ennis and its surroundings have the highest concentration of Bluebonnets in the state of Texas.

Ennis is served by the Ennis Independent School District. A local parochial school, St. John's, also serves the city. The city holds the annual National Polka Festival which features food, music, dancing, and a parade through downtown. Ennis has an annual Bluebonnet festival during the month of April.
 
Ennis is the only incorporated city in the United States that still elects its City Marshal. The election is held every two years with the winner being named Chief of Police by the City Council and City Manager. Currently the post is being held by Dale Holt.
