Eagle Pass
Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
Eagle Pass is a city in Maverick County, Texas, United States. The population was 22,413 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Maverick CountyGR6. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.2 square kilometers and 19.2 square kilometers of it is land and 0.1 square kilometers of it is water.
Eagle Pass borders the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, to the south across the Rio Grande River. Eagle Pass was the first United States settlement on the Rio Grande. A temporary camp for a Texas Militia was set up in the area to stop illegal trade with Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The United States Army established Fort Duncan in 1849 a couple of miles upstream from the camp. Trade flourished under the protection of the fort.
In 1850, a trading post opened and was called Eagle Pass. In 1871, Maverick County was established and Eagle Pass was named the county seat. During the remainder of the 1800s schools and churches opened, the mercantile and ranching industries grew, and a railway came through. Eagle Pass is served by the Eagle Pass Independent School District.
