Bay City




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Bay City is a city in Matagorda County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,667 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Matagorda CountyGR6. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.0 square kilometers. 22.0 square kilometers of it is land and 0.12 percent is water. It used to be named Bay Prairie, as the natural ecosystems that surround the town are prairies criscrossed by creeks that lead into the bay.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 30.9 percent under the age of 18, 9.8 percent from 18 to 24, 28.2 percent from 25 to 44, 20.0 percent from 45 to 64, and 11.1 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males. Bay City is served by the Bay City Independent School District. Education for black and white children began immediately.
 
Bay City, the county seat of Matagorda County, is an incorporated city at the junction of State Highways 35 and 60, in the north central portion of the county ninety miles southwest of Houston. The community is named for its location on Bay Prairie, between the richly productive bottomlands of the Colorado River and Caney Creek. It was established in 1894, when David Swickheimer,qv a Colorado mining millionaire and participant in a promotional organization called the Enterprise Land and Colonizing Company, formed the Bay City Town Company in partnership with G. M. Magill, N. M. Vogelsang, and Nicholas King.

It can also be considered as the preeminent, historical and potential tourism destination that enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers to become one of the most visited places.
