Athens




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade.

Athens is a city in Henderson County, Texas, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 11,297. It is the county seat of Henderson CountyGR6. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 44.0 square kilometers. 37.9 square kilometers of it is land and 6.1 square kilometers.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.4 percent under the age of 18, 11.6 percent from 18 to 24, 25.0 percent from 25 to 44, 19.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 17.9 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males. 
 
The City of Athens has been a Council/Manager form of Municipal Government since its adoption by Home Rule Charter in 1966. The Mayor and four Council Members are elected at large by the citizens of Athens. The City Council selects the City Administrator, is accountable to them for the overall operation and management of the City.
 
Athens, the County seat of Henderson County, was established by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1850 on a one square mile site of land donated by Matthew Cartwright.  The city was incorporated in 1856.  However, through a mischievous prank by several citizens the incorporation was abolished.
 
Athens is fast becoming a center of industry as well, with new plants of varied manufacture and process moving to our area annually.  This means a profitable means of income for many families who formerly had to depend on more rural enterprises for livelihood.

Athens is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
