Alamo

Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Alamo is a city located in an irrigated area of southern Hidalgo County, Texas. Incorporated in 1924 and named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company. Abundant vegetables, citrus and winter resort-retirement areas are also one of Valley's gateways to Mexico via U.S. 281 and Nuevo Progreso. The population was 14,760 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.8 square kilometers, all land. Much of Alamo resides in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District. Another portion resides in the Donna Independent School District. In addition, all Alamo residents are allowed to apply to magnet schools operated by the South Texas Independent School District.

The City of Alamo is also known as the Refuge to the Valley, being the doorway to the Sanata Ana National Wildlife Refuge. The Alamo Chamber of Commerce has informational pamphlets, brouchures and maps on activites and locations in Alamo and the Rio Grande Valley that would be of interest to everyone.

The City of Alamo has no direct relation to the Alamo located in San Antonio. The Alamo Land and Sugar Company once owned the land on which the city is located. The City of Alamo is located in the South Texas area known as the Rio Grande Valley. Alamo City Government page consists of Boards and Officials that have an impact on the City of Alamo and its citizens.

Alamo is located on the southern tip of Texas, in the center of the rich Rio Grande Valley, minutes from the Mexican border. About 14,000 visitors per year explore the Winter Texan life, visit friends and family, come on business, or on pilgrimages to the Shrine of the Virgin of San Juan in neighboring San Juan.
