DeSoto
Texas is a state located in the southern and western regions of the United States of America. The state is second largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth largest port in the world.
DeSoto is a city in Dallas County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 37,646 and was 45,514, according to 2005 census. According to the United States census bureau, the city has a total area of 55.9 square kilometers occupied by land. The DeSoto city logo was adopted on August 26, 1976. The logo, a large D, has the head of an eagle outlined on the inside. In the city the population was spread out with 28.2 percent under the age of 18, 7.6 percent from 18 to 24, 30.2 percent from 25 to 44, 24.8 percent from 45 to 64 and 9.3 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. The area was first settled in 1847, making it one of the oldest communities in north Texas. The settlement was named DeSoto in honor of Thomas Hernando DeSoto Stewart who was a doctor dedicated to the community. During the 1970s, continued growth brought about improvements to the municipal infrastructure including road construction and a new water sewage system. The industrial, commercial and residential construction also increased. There are several private and parochial schools in or near the city which serves approximately 7,000 students.
