Dallas
Texas is a state located in the southern and western regions of the United States of America. The state is second largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth largest port in the world.
Dallas is the third largest city in the state of Texas and the ninth largest in the United States. The city covers almost 400 square miles and is the county seat of Dallas County. According to 2005 census the city had a population of 1.2 million. Like many major cities, Dallas had experienced an urban renewal in the 2000. From the year 1988 to 2005, not a single high rise structure was built within the downtown freeway loop and most new and upscale homes and subdivisions were being built in Richardson and Plano. In 2005, three towers began construction amid residential conversions and smaller residential projects. Dallas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city on 2 February, 1856. It is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States and lacks any navigable link to the sea. Dallas' prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines and its powerful industrial and financial tycoons. In larger context, the area is seen as right wing politically, with a heavy cultural emphasis placed on Protestant Christianity and with close historical and cultural ties. The Arts district in downtown is home to several arts venues, both existing and proposed museum of art, symphony center and sculpture center. The venues under construction or planned include the Winspear Opera house and the Dallas center for the performing arts. The city is the main cultural and economic center. The city is known globally as a center for telecommunications, computer technology, banking, and transportation. It provides endless recreational opportunities for visitors and locals. Hence it is one of the most visited places amongst the most die hard travelers the world over.
