Corpus Christi
Texas is a state located in the southern and western regions of the United States of America. The state is second largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth largest port in the world.
Corpus Christi is the county seat of Nueces county and a coastal city located in Texas. It is a part of the region known as south Texas. As of 2000 census, it had a population of 277,454 people making it the eighth largest city in the state. The translation from Latin for the city's name is body of Christ, given to the settlement by the Spanish, in honor of the blessed Sacrament. The city is often referred as the sparkling city by the sea, particularly in literature promoting tourism. The locals and natives often just call it Corpus. Since 2003, the city has earned numerous awards. Corpus Christi offers various exciting opportunity to experience a rich blend of culture in the relaxed atmosphere of the historic coastal port. The city is served by the Corpus Christi International airport on the west side of the city. The Corpus Christi bay area is nestled behind barrier islands Padre Island and Mustang Island, as a protected gateway to the beautiful Padre Island national seashore. Corpus Christi neighbors Padre Island, which is the longest barrier island in the nation.
