The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Uvalde is a city in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 14,929 at the 2000 census. The city has a total area of 17.4 square kilometers. Uvalde is located at the intersection of the nation’s two longest highways, highway 83 and Highway 90 which runs from California to Florida. The population density was 857.8 per square kilometers.
