Murphy
Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world. Murphy is a city in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population of the city was 3,099 as of the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.6 square kilometers, all covered by land only. The city of Murphy, Texas adopted a home rule charter and the power of the city is vested in a council of elected individuals who regulate and legislate and appoint other officials, such as the city manager, who heads the executive branch. The council as of 2006 is Bret Baldwin, Michelle Long, Roger Davis, Eric Barna, Murray Sanderford and Dwayne Elledge. Bret Baldwin was elected Mayor in 2005 and is serving a 3 year term. The city is served by Plano independent school district and Wylie independent school district. The Plano ISD, Independent School District part is served by Boggess Elementary, Martha Hunt Elementary, Miller Elementary, Armstrong Middle School, Murphy Middle School, Williams High School, and Plano East Senior High School. The Wylie ISD part is served by Groves Elementary, R. F. Hartman Elementary, Akin P M Elementary School, Harry and Retha Tibbals Elementary School, Birmingham TF Elementary School, Harrison Intermediate School, Davis Intermediate School, Raymond B. Cooper Junior High School, McMillan Junior High School, Burnett Junior High School, and Wylie High School.
