Huntsville




Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.
 
Huntsville is a city and is also a newly designated metropolitan area located in the U.S. state of Texas within Walker County. As of the U.S. Census 2000, the city population was 35,078. Huntsville is the home of Sam Houston State University. It is the county seat of Walker County and is situated in East Texas. The city had its beginning about 1836, when Pleasant and Ephraim Gray opened a trading post on the site. Ephraim Gray became first postmaster in 1837, naming it after his former hometown, Huntsville, Alabama.

Huntsville offers visitors an array of discoveries history, nature, prominent state institutions, antiques all mixed with hometown hospitality. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 80.9 square kilometers, 80.0 square kilometers is covered by land and 0.9 square kilometers by water.

Huntsville is the headquarters of the Texas department of criminal justice. As such, it houses the execution chamber of the state of Texas. Executions take place in the historic downtown building known as the walls. Huntsville became the home of Sam Houston, the first President of the Republic of Texas, and later Governor of the state. Located in town are two of Houston's homes, a museum, a 66 feet statue, Sam Houston State University, and Houston's grave.

Huntsville is also said to be as the city of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and pursue enthusiasm in its natural beauty and populace.
