Bedford

Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Bedford is a suburban city located in northeast Tarrant County, Texas in the mid-cities area between Dallas and Fort Worth. The population was 47,152 at the 2000 census. Bedford is part of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford independent school district. Neighboring cities include Hurst and Euless, with which Bedford forms the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.5 percent under the age of 18, 9.7 percent from 18 to 24, 32.9 percent from 25 to 44, 26.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 8.7 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

In 2004 the Bedford city council determined that after years of cost cutting, a property tax increase would be necessary. The council adopted a tax rate a few cents higher than that recommended by the city manager, who had suggested splitting the rate increase over two years. The manager recognized that a rate which was greater than eight percent above the prior level would allow residents to use a provision of state law calling for a tax rollback election by petition, but splitting the increase would not result in a rollback petition.

Bedford is incorporated as a home rule city and operates under the council-manager form of government. All powers of the city and the determination of policy are vested in an elective Council which enacts legislation, adopts budgets, determines policies, and appoints the city manager to execute the laws and administer the government of the City.

Bedford is said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
