Beaumont

Texas is a state located in the Southern and Western regions of the United States of America. The state is second-largest in both area and population behind Alaska and California, respectively. The state's name derives from a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai. Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. Texas is internationally known for its energy and aeronautics industries, and for its ship channel at the Port of Houston, the largest in the U.S. in international commerce and the sixth-largest port in the world.

Beaumont is a city and county seat of Jefferson County, Texas and is within the Beaumont-Port Arthur metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 113,866. With Port Arthur and Orange, it forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Gulf Coast. Lamar University is based in Beaumont. The city's daily newspaper is the Beaumont Enterprise. An alternative weekly newspaper, the examiner, is published on Fridays. The total area of the city Beaumont was 222.6 square kilometers.

Beaumont is on Texas's coastal plain, about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico, and just south of the dense pine forests of East Texas. The city is bordered on the east by the Neches River and to the north by Pine Island Bayou. Beaumont has a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers. The most recent snow event was December 24, 2004, the first such occurrence since 1989. The area suffered a severe ice storm in 1997.

Beaumont, Texas, was a small river town more than 100 years ago, when an event occurred that would forever change the town and its river. In 1901, newspaper headlines introduced Beaumont to the world as a small lumber rice cattle town on the Neches River that had brought in an oil gusher at Spindletop. Today, while Beaumont gains fame as the location of an important energy research center, it continues to add a diversity of businesses to its petroleum based industries.

Beaumont is definitely one of the popular tourist attractions in Texas worth paying a visit while touring the country. This place leaves a pleasing and unforgettable memory and justifies the proud cultural tradition of Texas.
